Let's Stuff a Truck and Help Feed the Hungry!

Today, Michael McKee, the CEO of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, spoke to our club and gave us some staggering statistics about hunger in our area. Here are some key takeaways:

  1. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 118,600 people per month

  2. The area they serve is 12,500 square miles and covers 25 counties and 8 cities on either side of the Blue Ridge through distribution centers in Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Winchester and their Verona headquarters

  3. The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank distributes over 25 million pounds of food a year (20.6 million meals)

  4. Volunteers contributed over 24,000 hours of labor in 2015

  5. Serving 7,530 children each month through after school programs

  6. 11.9% of Virginians struggle with hunger. 146,770, or 10%, live in the Blue Ridge area

  7. 1 out of every 6 children—or 53,690 children in our service area—struggles with hunger. In Virginia, 16.8% of children are food insecure

Figures like these can seem daunting, but we have an opportunity to help!

Help them Stuff A Truck!

The Food Bank will be collecting donations of food and other items for food-insecure neighbors on Friday, September 16, from 7a.m. to 7p.m.

The one-day food drive will be held at four grocery stores — Martin’s in Harrisonburg, Staunton and Waynesboro, and Giant Foods in Charlottesville. The annual event is held in partnership with WHSV, iHeart Radio, Monticello Media and the Charlottesville Newsplex.
